Eclectic Round 7

The winter "eclectic" competition is drawing to a close. The seventh round saw Tudor Williams win with 33 points. In second place also with 33 was Stan Smith - third place went to Bill Crozier with 32 points.

Seaford Head First Visit of the Year!

"We finally played our Seaford Head Away Day on Thursday 20th January after two weather put off tries the previous 2 weeks. The weather was really good, brisk in the shade and warm in the sun. Seventeen players turned out and the following were winners. (All were winners really because we played in excellent conditions, a lot of points were scored by most and we walked off the course in the same clean clothes we walked on!)

Politeness!

A guy was getting ready to tee off on the first hole when a second golfer approached and asked if he could join him. The first said that he usually played alone, but agreed to the twosome.

They were even after the first few holes. The second guy said "We're about evenly matched, how about playing for a pound a hole?" The first guy said that he wasn't much for betting, but agreed to the terms.

The second guy won the remaining sixteen holes with ease.

As they were walking off the course the second guy, busy counting his winnings, confessed that he was the pro at a neighbouring course and liked to pick on suckers. The first fellow then revealed that he was the Parish Priest. The pro, flustered and apologetic, offered to return the money. The Priest said, "You won fair and square and I was foolish to bet with you. Please keep your winnings."

The pro said, "Is there anything I can do to make it up to you?"

"The Priest replied "Well, you could come to Mass on Sunday and make a donation. And, if you want to bring your mother and father along, I'll marry them!"

Crawley Club Xmas Lunch!

Seaford Head

When Seaford Head first opened in 1886, it had only twelve holes, but within two years it was an eighteen hole course. The course was built on a Saxon camp whose origins go back to the Iron Age. During the last war, the course was used by the military and for food production. A lone pill box guards against invasion. The war years caused a lot of damage to the course but it was repaired in 1946. Unusually there is an air navigation beacon located on the course, that is used by pilots en route to Gatwick airport and beyond.

Nowadays to say the course is stunning is an understatement. Go and experience the magnificent views of the sea and the South Downs, especially those from the 13th hole onwards, which have panoramic views of the Seven Sisters towards Beachy Head.

And now the golf on Thursday 9 December organised superbly, as always, by Brian Cowie. In first place with a record 48 points was Ivor Blunden. Second and third place respectively with 40 points were Dug Godfrey and Peter Quelch. In fourth place with 38 points was Ron Stocker.

Nearest the pins were won by Peter Quelch, Brian Cowie, Bryan Redley, Bill Crozier and Brian Wood.
