The lie of the ball?

Golf is a game in which the ball lies poorly and the players lie well.

Hungry?

If a lot of people gripped a knife and fork the way they do a golf club, they'd starve to death.

Good play?

While playing golf today I hit two good balls. I stepped on a rake.

Match against H.O.G.G.S

Brian Cowie reports

Played at Tilgate 14th April 2011.

This is our season curtain raiser. The weather was kind to us, and although we had a sprinkling of rain halfway through the first nine, the rest of the day was excellent weather. It’s really nice greeting our old friends at these matches and also meeting new faces. The match was held in great spirits, you could tell from the clubhouse banter after the match that everybody, win or lose, had had a good time.

Many thanks to Colin and Carole for their efforts in making this day a success. Colin kindly moved the tee positions so that we played off of good grass rather than the “ploughed field” we experienced on Monday. I J and his team provided us with an excellent meal and good service, a very well done to all of them.

The first match out was notable for the fact that all 4 protagonists couldn’t hit the ball!! We halved holes in 6, won holes with a 6 and lost holes to a 6 and until Geoff holed two consecutive long putts on 13 and 14 we were in the mix. Unfortunately we went down by 3/1. We said we thought it was the polite thing to do to your visitors, Peter was quick to point out after this kindness on our part that we would not get the same consideration when we visited them!! Well!!!

The match results were as follows:

Brian Cowie & Ron Humphrey lost 3/1 to Peter Channell (C)& Geoff Marlowe.
Bill Crozier & Dug Godfrey won 4/2 against Nick Rowles & Mike Short.
Tudor Williams & Peter Quelch won 7/6 against Gareth Bevan & Graham Croll
Ivor Clays & Ron Lewis won 4/2 against Richard Hanson & David Fry.
Bryan Foster & Colin Puddephatt won 3/2 against Alan Glover & David Attewell.
Terry Penfold & Ivor Blunden won 5/4 against Gavin Smith & mike Parks.

So you can see it was a 5 matches to 1 win for the Home team. Well done Lads, Ron and I are devastated we let you down!!!

Under 100!

I'll always remember the day I broke 100. I had a few beers in the clubhouse and was so excited I forgot to play the back nine.

Actually, the only time I ever took out a one-iron was to kill a tarantula. I did it in 7.

Foxbridge Away Day!

Foxbridge golf club opened for business in 1992. The course was built on the land that was originally Foxbridge Farm, indeed the owner of the 14th century cottage opposite the course originally farmed the land. During its life Foxbridge has had many esteemed admirers, from the late great Max Faulkner, the 1951 Open Champion, and his life long friend and Ryder Cup partner Ken Bowsfield, who regularly played here, to more recent visitors including Chris Evans, Greg Rusedski, Robbie Williams, Ant & Dec and Jodie Kidd who lived locally and chose Foxbridge for their golf.

Foxbridge was also the venue for the Tilgate Seniors on Thursday 31 March.

Brian Cowie writes

On a cloudy and warm overcast day 19 players attempted to tame the 9 hole course. For those who don’t know the course each hole has a large double green with 2 pin positions. You play to a different coloured flag on each nine. It’s surprising how difficult this can be – just remembering which colour to play to!!

When we arrived they greeted us warmly, the organiser, me, was given a dozen golf balls for organizing the day. That’s a first as far as I am concerned, no club has ever given me anything before. The balls I donated for prizes after the golf. The food was excellent and the service was immaculate. It was apparent to all that we were valued clients whose business was actively sought after for future events. They offered me nearest the pin flags and I told them I usually made out cards for those holes. They said they had them if I wanted them and they would deliver them to each of the holes so that they were ready for us. When we arrived at the relevant holes the flags were there each had Tilgate Golf Club Seniors Section printed on them together with the number of the hole. The reason I have gone into such detail is that this day cost us £26 for Coffee and Bacon Roll on arrival, Golf followed by Ham, Egg and Chips and all the pampering we could get. Tilgate please take note.

As to the golf, it was reasonable in the main and exceptional in 1 or 2 cases.
The winners were:
N/P 5th Mike Dean
3rd shot 7th Terry Phillips
9th Brian Wood
2nd shot 11th Bill Huntley
14th George Lockert
18th Bryan Foster
Hacker Terry Phillips (bad day at the office!)
4th Ron Stocker 40 points
3rd Mike Dean 40 points
2nd Dug Godfrey 41 points
1st Ken Jordan 44 points

It should be pointed out that this was Ken’s first away day for some time due to health reasons. The predominant view was that it will be his last for some time if he persists in winning all the money!! Well done Ken and to all the winners. The last Away Day of the season is on 21st April at Seaford Head

The William Crozier Trophy leaders are: Dug Godfrey 281 points, Ron Stocker (defending champion) 280 points, Bryan Foster 276 points and Bill Huntley 272 points. The rest of us are a little too far back!! Good luck to all four on the day.
